Considering a Career Move into Education Administration?
If you're considering a move into elementary or
secondary school administration from either a closely related field or from a totally unrelated
profession, you'll be looking for a transitional resume -- and a talented resume writer to handle the assignment.

goals for the school and how to reach them. Much of your time is spent in a designated office where

time to discuss important issues.
Full-time work with overtime is typical of a school principal, and unlike teachers
who generally get summer off, you must work year-round. You serve as the top-level administrator of
a public or private learning institution.

Education and Training: You must have a master's degree in
education administration or a related field to be hired as a school principal. These advanced
programs help you to develop the skills necessary to be successful at the job--skills that include:
management, budgeting, goal setting and achievement, interpersonal relations, public speaking, and
more. However, getting into a master's degree program requires you to already have a bachelor's
degree. While a four-year degree in education is the most direct route, you will be considered with
a degree in business administration, psychology, counseling, or some other relevant area of
study.
Unfortunately, a degree isn't worth much without real-world experience to back it
up. Most school principals have several years of experience as a teacher before applying for the
position. Others may have served as school counselors or held management positions before becoming
a principal.
If you plan on working in a public school, you will have to get licensed as well.
While specific requirements vary depending on the state, you usually need to have a master's
degree, pass an exam, and continue to take courses or receive other training to become and remain
licensed.
