If you're considering a move into sales engineering from either a closely related field or from a totally unrelated profession, you'll be looking for a transitional resume -- and a talented resume writer to handle the assignment. What You'll Do: Becoming a sales engineer means taking on a number of important duties. If you don't enjoy frequent travel, you probably don't enjoy your work very much. Selling products requires you to travel within expansive sales regions to finalize contracts, meet with potential buyers, perform repairs or quality checks on certain units and more. This usually means that you don't work a regular schedule and that your job can interfere with personal and family time. Doing overtime, nights, weekends, and holidays is often mandatory.

Education and Training: The most common educational requirement for becoming a sales engineer is a bachelor's degree in an engineering field. Popular engineering disciplines include: mechanical, electrical, computer, civil, chemical, biomedical, and aerospace. Individuals who also possess other degrees in business administration, psychology, marketing, or communications will have a big advantage when it comes to getting hired.

In some cases, those without engineering degrees will be able to land a job with sufficient working experience. The engineering degree generally culminates in an internship that will give you valuable experience in a real-world setting.

Even with an engineering degree, several years of experience in sales is highly recommended and might be required by some employers.

The Future: The Sales Engineering profession is expected to grow at about 14% through 2020.

The Pay: Annual salaries for Sales Engineers in the U.S. range from $51,900 to $146,500, with the average median annual wage hitting $89,300 in 2011 as per the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
